Good News

I saw a silhouette of a figure crest on the mountaintop waving frantically. I had a good feeling about him. An ominous tak-tak-tak breaks into my happy expectancy. People scrambled away from a shower of bullets that rains down on them from the sky. The whole summer flashes before my eyes. People wading through knee-deep even waist-deep flood waters. Buildings crumbling as people scramble away uttering terrified phrases in Spanish. Tragedy hits even closer to home.

I am glancing at my parents faces on the tiny shattered screen of my mobile phone. It’s been over week since I’ve talked to them. They don’t have gas, cell phone service or electricity. They’ve come on foot to a nearby university because they “were desperate to talk to people.” Dad has been trying to get some sort of internet service for work without success. I am hoping that I’ll get to see my siblings before the connections cuts out and God knows when I’ll talk to them again. I don’t.
I glance up at the tiny little figure on the mountaintop. “How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of the messenger who brings good news.” What good news does he bring?

The war is won

We are caught in the middle of a ferocious struggle –a battle for the death. However, the war is already won. Good has triumphed over evil and will soon the onslaught of disasters will be brought to an end. It will just be a little while longer until that old dragon who doesn’t what to give up will be brought to justice.

The winner is good

Well, who won the war? The God of Israel. Who is the God of Israel? YHWH –the I AM. Or more simply, Love, for the apostle John states:
God is love.
That means that God is patient and kind. God is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. He does not demand his own way. He is not irritable, and He keeps no record of being wronged. He does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. God never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance. (Based on 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 NLT).

The winner is coming soon

The struggle may be still going on here on earth. Much like in the olden days when a runner had to carry the tidings that the war had been won to the far regions of the kingdom on foot, the news is still getting out about the good king that has won this cosmic battle. The king that loves his subjects and has put forth every resource to save them. He will come to bring justice and healing to our broken world.

How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of the messenger who brings good news, the good news of peace and salvation, the news that the God of Israel reigns!
Now, that’s good news! That is what has been sustaining me over these few difficult months.
Are you ready?
